Chameleons make good pets when kept in the right conditions. They are not the most ideal first time reptile pet, but once you have the idea of controlling the temperature they are a good pet to move onto after geckos. It is also possible to breed them in captivity if you know what you are doing. But what do chameleons like to eat? If you have a pet chameleon, what should you feed him?
Chameleons are Insectivores
Chameleons are generally insectivores. They eat a variety of insects. Commonly eaten insects include crickets, mealworms, waxworms, and superworms. In addition to these common insects, chameleons will also eat other things such as lizards, mice and birds or even small snakes.
Chameleons love Crickets
Most chameleons will be able to eat crickets. However, some types of chameleons require you to get smaller crickets so they are able to consume them whole. If you have a species of chameleon that can’t handle large crickets or even smaller ones it is suggested that you get a different species of chameleon or perhaps stick with geckos which are not as picky.
Catching bugs for your Chameleon
If you want to feed your chameleon bugs that you catch yourself, make sure that you know what the bug has been eating. You do not want to feed your chameleon something that is going to make it sick. Make sure the insects are clean and not dirty or smelly. Also, make sure they are fresh and have recently eaten, otherwise they will be too full to eat and will pass a lot of waste. It’s better to avoid this unless you know exactly what you are doing.
What do Chameleons eat?
You can choose which food you feed your chameleon depending on their needs. If they are an adult with a lot of experience eating crickets, then maybe superworms would be a good choice for them because they are really easy for adults to eat whole.
